Ambien (zolpidem) is a prescription sedative-hypnotic medication indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, particularly difficulty falling asleep. It works by enhancing the activity of GABA, a neurotransmitter that slows brain activity, helping to promote relaxation and sleep onset.
Ambien is available in 5 mg and 10 mg immediate-release tablets, as well as extended-release formulations for patients who have trouble staying asleep. It is typically taken once nightly, immediately before bedtime, with at least 7–8 hours available for sleep.
As a Schedule IV controlled substance, Ambien should be used only under medical supervision due to the potential for side effects, dependence, and next-day drowsiness. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, and daytime sleepiness.
Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
